Preserving the Oath and Controlling the Self
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 363 )
Q: One day I was in a gathering, and I swore by the Great Allah that the riyal is dearer to some people than saying: "There is no god but Allah," and I meant some people in the world . Am I faithful in my oath or a sinner? And if I have broken my oath, what is its expiation?
A1: If the matter is as you mentioned in your question, that by your saying "some people" you meant "some people in the world," then you have not broken your oath; because most people are mushrikin (those who associate partners with Allah) who refuse to say "There is no god but Allah," and among them are atheists who deny the existence of Allah. But there is no good in what you spoke, and it is not permissible for you to swear such an oath when you are not compelled to do so. So you must preserve your oath and control your tongue.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
