Oath to memorize Surat al-Baqarah, but he only memorized a part of it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question from fatwa number ( 10587 )
Q4: A man swore by the Great Allah that if he succeeded in his studies, he would memorize Surat al-Baqarah. He memorized the first part but did not memorize the rest, due to a lack of focus in memorizing the Qur'an and his preoccupation with work and worldly affairs. What is the action he must perform?
A4: If that is the case, it is obligatory for him to pay the expiation for an oath; because he broke his oath by not memorizing the surah he swore to memorize. The expiation for an oath is: feeding ten poor people from the type of food his family eats, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If he cannot do that, he must fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
