Vowing to Allah to sell his lost sheep if he finds them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 5874 )
Q: I had some sheep that were lost and remained missing for two days without my finding them. Then the owner of a car came to me and said, “I found some sheep, and the wolf ate them at ten o’clock at night.” I said, “I have vowed to Allah that if He saves them from the wolf, I will sell them. There were fifty (50) of them, and all were saved except two that the wolf ate. So give me a ruling: should I sell them or not? ?
A: If the situation is as you described, you have the choice between selling them, in which case you owe nothing, or keeping them in your ownership. However, you must pay the expiation for an oath, which is: feeding ten poor people from the best of what you feed your family, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. It suffices for you to give each of the ten poor people half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of wheat, dates, rice, or something similar to what you eat. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
