Expiation for an oath when one breaks it

Fatwa number ( 10885 )
Q: I live with a family consisting of my father, four brothers other than me, and two sisters. I am the middle one among my siblings, meaning: the oldest in age among them. My father works as a preacher for one of the mosques under the Ministry of Awqaf, and since childhood he has guided us to the path of Allah and His Messenger. However, no one in the family
responds, and none of them acts upon what has become narrow for them. I took it upon myself to advise my brothers, for example, to pray, fast, not harm the neighbors, follow the Sunnah of the Messenger and his guidance, and to put Allah first. That is: I clarified the religion to them, but I find nothing from them except laughter, mockery, and licentiousness. I even swore to my younger brothers that whoever I do not find in the mosque at prayer time I will beat, so that he gets used to going to the mosque; because prayer is the pillar of the religion, and prayer is the connection between the servant and his Lord. This is based on the hadith of the Prophet:
There is no prayer for a neighbor of the mosque except in the mosqueلا صلاة لجار المسجد إلا في المسجد
Sunan ad-Daraqutni 3:592
. In fact, I did beat one of the younger brothers because he refuses to pray, lies to me, and says: "I prayed." Another time he lies and evades my question to him: "Why did you not pray?" He lies and says: "Your father sent me to such-and-such" — for example — and that is a lie. When I beat him, there was anger from my mother and the brothers, both male and female, who listen to songs and watch dirty Egyptian films, and non-Egyptian filthy ones, which have no goal except to destroy Islam and turn the Muslim youth and Muslims away from the correct path of Islam. So the question here is: Do I bear the sin of my brothers, or what? Since Allah the Mighty and Majestic says:
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones, over which are [appointed] angels, harsh and severe; they do not disobey Allah in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
[At-Tahrim 66:6]

And if these brothers who are distant from Allah and His Messenger do all this, is it from Islam for me to live with them, which includes eating, drinking, and clothing? And do I have to fast three days as expiation for the oath I swore regarding my younger brothers?

A: You should continue in following up with advice and guiding your brothers, and you, your father, and the people of good should cooperate to direct them to good, guide them to it, and keep them away from bad companions; perhaps Allah will guide them. If they persist in abandoning prayer, then avoid them. As for your oath regarding your brothers, if you have broken it, it is obligatory for you to pay the expiation for the oath, which is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you do not find the means to do so, fast three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
