Fatwa number ( 10468 )
Q: It happened that I told my wife: By Allah, if you do such-and-such, she in turn said: No, by Allah, I will not do it , and that was the end of the question.
I hope you will inform me if there is anything wrong with this, and when I said to her: By Allah, I did not intend anything, it was just a mere oath. Please give us a ruling, may Allah prolong your life and the life of every working scholar, and may Allah grant success.

A: If your wife did not do the prescribed matter that you swore she would do - then you must expiate an oath, which is: feeding ten poor people, each poor person half a sa' of wheat or rice, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave, if you do not find the means to do so, then fast for three days, Allah the Exalted said:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oathsلاَ يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللَّهُ بِاللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ وَلَكِنْ يُؤَاخِذُكُمْ بِمَا عَقَّدْتُمُ الأَيْمَانَ فَكَفَّارَتُهُ إِطْعَامُ عَشَرَةِ مَسَاكِينَ مِنْ أَوْسَطِ مَا تُطْعِمُونَ أَهْلِيكُمْ أَوْ كِسْوَتُهُمْ أَوْ تَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ ثَلاثَةِ أَيَّامٍ ذَلِكَ كَفَّارَةُ أَيْمَانِكُمْ إِذَا حَلَفْتُمْ وَاحْفَظُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ
