Oath not to do something, then being compelled to do it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I swore on the mushaf not to do a specific thing, but circumstances compelled me to break this oath. I want to expiate this sin, so what is the way?
Answer: You must pay the expiation for an oath if you did what you swore to leave off—whether your oath was on the mushaf or not—because Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ma'idah: 89]. If you feed ten poor people breakfast or dinner, or clothe them, the expiation is achieved by that. If you give each of them half a sa' of dates, wheat, or rice, that is sufficient. If what you swore about is a sin against Allah, such as smoking, drinking intoxicants, or the like, it is forbidden for you to do it, even if you had not sworn to leave it off. And beware of what Allah has forbidden for you.
Answer: You must pay the expiation for an oath if you did what you swore to leave off—whether your oath was on the mushaf or not—because Allah the Exalted said:
Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths
