Wearing silk by men and the ruling on its tailoring

Fatwa No. ( 18155 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and may peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, the manager of the branch of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in 'Asir, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, with number (3879) and date 8/8/1416. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is as follows: I attach to your Eminence a letter from the honorable head of the Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (in al-Farshah), number (170/44), dated 25/7/1416 AH, regarding what the members of the al-Farshah Commission center observed: that men's tailoring shops are cutting silk fabrics for men in what is called in that region (al-Kartah), i.e., what is called in Arabic (the shirt), which the young men wear. And because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has forbidden men from wearing silk and permitted it for women, and these people wear it without regard, due to their ignorance of the rulings of the religion and their strong focus on custom, and in order to address the situation—and given your Eminence's acceptance and standing in the hearts of the people—I hope your Eminence will guide us in this matter, and issue a fatwa on the basis of which this issue can be addressed and distributed to all of the Tihama region,
for perhaps this matter is widespread there.

After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered that it is not permissible for males to wear silk; because Allah has forbidden the males of this Ummah from wearing gold and silk. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Do not wear silk (clothes). For whoever wears (them) in this life will be deprived of them in the Hereafter.لا تلبسوا الحرير فإن من لبسه في الدنيا لم يلبسه في الآخرة
Riyad as-Salihin 803
agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Gold and silk are lawful for the females among my followers, but prohibited to the malesأحل الذهب والحرير لإناث أمتي وحرم على ذكورهم
Bulugh al-Maram 2:460
, and it is obligatory to prevent tailoring shops that sew silk clothing for men; because this is an evil that must be changed and prevented. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who amongst you sees something abominable should modify it with the help of his hand; and if he has not strength enough to do it, then he should do it with his tongue, and if he has not strength enough to do it, (even) then he should (abhor it) from his heart, and that is the least of faith.من رأى منكم منكرًا فليغيره بيده، فإن لم يستطيع بلسانه، فإن لم يستطيع فبقلبه وذلك أضعف الإيمان
Sahih Muslim 49a
. However, if this silk is synthetic, it is not forbidden for men to wear it; because it is not real silk, and real silk is that which is made from what the silkworm produces. And what is permissible for men from silk is what is the width of two, three, or four fingers.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
