All praise is due to Allah alone, and may blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the President General from the Director of Media Relations and Internal Production at Saudi Arabian Airlines, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (4134) and date 1 \ 6 \ 1409 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is: We would like to inquire from your eminence about reading the Noble Qur'an directly from the Noble Mushaf by aircraft crew members (the pilot, the co-pilot, and the flight engineer) during flight , especially given that the preoccupation of aircraft crew members with anything other than their primary duties may expose the aircraft and its passengers to matters with undesirable consequences, God forbid. We have desired to seek guidance from your eminence's fatwa before taking any action in this regard; so that the decision we make is based on religion and the Islamic Shari'ah. May Allah reward you with the best reward, and may Allah prolong your life.
After studying the inquiry, the Committee answered that it is obligatory to prevent aircraft crew members from anything that distracts them from their duty, such as reading and the like; because of the great danger to the aircraft and its passengers that results from their preoccupation with anything other than their duty.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
