Social Security

Fatwa No. ( 164 )
Q: I submitted a petition to the Social Security Office in 1383 AH, and I was supporting a family of four. My situation was difficult, and I received a salary from Social Security. Then my sons grew up and my daughters got married, and only my wife and I remained. My situation is good, praise be to Allah, without any income or trade. Do I have the right to a salary from Social Security or not? I ask you to inform me. May Allah guide you.
A: If the matter is as you described in your inquiry, regarding your submission of a request to Social Security while you were in a state of hardship and supporting your wife and your young sons and daughters, then what you took from Social Security in that situation is lawful for you. However, after your sons grew up and your daughters got married, and there is no one whose maintenance is obligatory upon you except your wife, you may take from Social Security only what is sufficient for you and your wife according to custom, provided that your sons do not have what is sufficient for them and for you and your wife. If your sons have money sufficient for their maintenance, your maintenance, and your wife’s maintenance, it is obligatory upon them to provide it, and it is not permissible for you to take from Social Security in this case; because the wealth of your sons, even if it is what they earn monthly or
daily, is wealth for you and your wife, and your maintenance and your wife’s maintenance are obligatory upon them if you do not have what is sufficient for you and her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
