The Ruling on Vows in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 8059 )
Q 1: What is the ruling on vows in Islam, given that some people have held onto this practice since the days of their fathers and grandfathers, slaughtering an animal and saying that it is intended for Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), knowing that they make this vow at specific times of the year, and most of them do so in the blessed month of Ramadan? What is the ruling on this in Islam? Is it permissible? Please inform us, may Allah reward you.
A 1: First: Vows of devotion, such as slaughtering animals, performing voluntary prayers, fasting voluntarily, and the like, are acts of worship. Therefore, if one makes such a vow for Allah, he must fulfill it; as Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows - indeed, Allah knows of itوَمَا أَنْفَقْتُمْ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ أَوْ نَذَرْتُمْ مِنْ نَذْرٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُهُ
[Al-Baqarah 2:270]
, and He said:
They fulfill their vowsيُوفُونَ بِالنَّذْرِ
And as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Himمن نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
And if one makes such a vow for other than Allah, whether for a prophet, an angel, or a close friend of Allah, it is shirk (associating partners with Allah); because he has directed an act of devotion and worship to other than Allah. He must therefore repent to Allah and seek forgiveness for the shirk that occurred from him. Second: Slaughtering for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or for any other creation, as a means of drawing near to them or honoring them, is shirk, because it involves worshipping other than Allah. Therefore, repentance from this and seeking forgiveness are obligatory.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
