What is obligatory upon one who makes a vow to the awliya (close friends of Allah)?

Question:
Her other question says: A while ago, I encountered a problem, so I made a vow to one of the imams that this problem would be resolved. I have learned that it is not permissible to make a vow to anyone other than Allah.
Knowing that the place where the imam is located is far from me, is it permissible for me to give this vow to the poor, or to expiate for it?
Please advise us, may Allah preserve you.

Answer:
This vow is invalid; because it is worship directed to other than Allah. And you must repent to Allah for that, and return to Him, with sincere repentance, seeking forgiveness, and regret.
For a vow is an act of worship. Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever you spend of expenditures or make of vows - indeed, Allah knows of itوَمَا أَنفَقْتُمْ مِنْ نَفَقَةٍ أَوْ نَذَرْتُمْ مِنْ نَذْرٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُهُ
[al-Baqarah:270] meaning: He will reward you for it. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
So this vow is invalid, the one you made to one of the dead imams, whether 'Ali or al-Husayn, or Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir, or others; it is invalid. Likewise, vows to others, such as a vow to al-Badawi, or to Sayyidah Zaynab, or Sayyidah Nafisah, or otherwise, are all invalid. Likewise, a vow to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is also invalid.
A vow is not permissible except for Allah alone; because it is worship, so prayer, slaughter, vows, fasting, and supplication are all for Allah alone (Glorified and Exalted is He)As Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.إِيَّاكَ نَعْبُدُ وَإِيَّاكَ نَسْتَعِينُ
[Surat al-Fatihah:5] He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Himوَقَضَى رَبُّكَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوا إِلَّا إِيَّاهُ
[Surat al-Isra:23] meaning: He commanded that you not worship except Him. He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said:
So invoke Allah, [being] sincere to Him in religion, although the disbelievers dislike it.فَادْعُوا اللَّهَ مُخْلِصِينَ لَهُ الدِّينَ وَلَوْ كَرِهَ الْكَافِرُونَ
[Surat Ghafir:14] The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said::
so do not invoke with Allah anyone.فَلا تَدْعُوا مَعَ اللَّهِ أَحَدًا
[Surat al-Jinn:18].
So worship is the right of Allah, and a vow is worship, and fasting is worship, and prayer is worship, and supplication is worship, and slaughter is worship. It is obligatory to make them sincere for Allah alone.
So this vow is invalid; you owe nothing from it, neither to the poor nor to others. Rather, you must repent and seek forgiveness. You are not required to fulfill this vow; because it is invalid and shirk (associating partners with Allah). And you must have sincere repentance, and righteous deeds. May Allah guide you, and lead you to that in which He is pleased, and bestow upon you sincere repentance. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
