Fatwa No. ( 3928 )
Q: I have a son who passed away at the age of one year and three months,
and he was my first son, and I loved him more than his sisters because of his intelligence and quickness. He was of an age where he acted like a rational person, so when he passed away, I vowed to allocate one hundred riyals from my monthly salary each month and spend it on weak people, and the amount is not a burden on me, meaning I would pay him 1200 riyals per year. However, I read a hadith that says it is not obligatory to seek forgiveness for these children, but rather to seek forgiveness for their parents, because they did not commit any evil deeds. I am confused about this vow: is it obligatory for me to fulfill it or not? Please provide information on the authenticity of the hadith regarding seeking forgiveness for them. Thank you, and may Allah accept from you, for He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive.

A: It is obligatory for you to fulfill this vow for as long as you have a monthly salary; based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows to obey Allah, let him obey Him, and whoever vows to disobey Allah, let him not disobey Him.من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه، ومن نذر أن يعصي الله فلا يعصه
Sunan Ibn Majah 2126Sahih (Darussalam)
narrated by al-Bukhari in (his Sahih). The hadith you mentioned, we do not know of any basis for it. There is no harm in making du'a for children who died before reaching the age of accountability, and doing good deeds with the intention of reward for them increases their ranks with Allah and their intercession for their parents. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
