Fatwa No. ( 13080 )
Q: I started working three months ago, and when I began I made a vow to Allah the Exalted, between myself and Him, that if Allah grants me success in my work, I would set aside 500 riyals from my salary each month for the cause of Allah for a period of ten months, starting from the salary of the third month. At that time, I intended to spend this amount on the maintenance of mosques, or on purchasing and printing some beneficial books and distributing them, provided that this be done in my hometown in Egypt, and on that basis, is it permissible for me to postpone this until I return to my country after the period of residence in the Kingdom that Allah wills for me? And if that is permissible, is it permissible for me to utilize that amount by spending it on other matters? Because I wish to send for my wife to come and reside with me here in the Kingdom, which requires finding an apartment and furnishing it, while committing, if Allah wills, to spending the full 5000 riyals on what I vowed for when I return to my country; because I do not find anyone I trust to send the amount to so that he may spend it as I wish. Also, I want to spend it myself to ensure that it is done correctly, or is it permissible for me to send it to my parents (my father and my mother) because they need some money, as my mother wants to perform Hajj and my father wants to pay off some commercial debts on him, knowing that my salary is 2000 riyals per month.
A: It is obligatory for you to fulfill the vow you made according to your intention; because it is
a vow of obedience, and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 1 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
