Fatwa number ( 12074 )
Q: I am a student in the second year of middle school, and I vowed that if I succeed in moving from the second year to the third year, I will give charity for the sake of Allah the Exalted as a thanksgiving to Him. I did not succeed and I left the charity. What is the ruling on this vow and on leaving this vow? What is the ruling on studying here if I am eager to study? And is it permissible to make a vow of fasting?
A: There is no harm in you continuing your studies, and if you succeed, fulfill your vow; because it is a vow of obedience. As for the vow of fasting, it is permissible; due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih al-Bukhari 6696 . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
