Divorcing the wife at the father's request

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 10940 )
Q: I am of Yemeni nationality, and I am 25 years old. I got married three years ago, and a disagreement occurred between my wife's family and my family. My father insisted
on my divorcing my wife. Out of obedience to my father and kindness to him, and so that I would not disobey him, I divorced her. Then Allah the Exalted blessed me, and I married another woman after divorcing the first one. However, I also found my father insisting on the divorce of my second wife, for no reason other than that he speaks about her in an inappropriate manner. Since there is no Sharia reason for me to divorce my wife other than my father's insistence on it, and the truth is that I find nothing in our life that calls for divorce—in fact, she is an example of a good wife—but in the face of my father's desire, I seek your permission, your Excellency, for a ruling: Is it permissible for me to divorce her out of obedience to my father, and for no sin she has committed, or should I hold on to her and not divorce her, even if that angers my father? Because he is insisting on it with absolute certainty. Give us a ruling, may Allah reward you.

A : It is obligatory for you to be dutiful to your father and to treat him well in word and deed as much as you can, but it is not obligatory for you to divorce your wife based on your father's request as long as she is righteous and upright. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
