The third question of Fatwa No. ( 18857 )
Q3: I am a young married man in Egypt . Problems have arisen between my father and my brother-in-law, and in response, my father has insisted that I divorce his daughter. He says that he will disown me if I do not do so. I have a small daughter, so what should I do? I am living in confusion, because if I do not divorce her, my father will disown me? And if I divorce her without a reason, that is injustice and tyranny, not only to her, but to my small daughter as well. So, for the sake of Allah, guide us to the good so that I may follow it, for I want not to wrong any of them. They are: the girl and her mother on one side, and my father who has shown his hatred, despite the extent of his great love for me, as he provides me with everything that indicates this. I greatly fear his anger, and may Allah reward you with good.
A3: You must try to convince your father not to divorce your wife. If he insists, it is obligatory for you to divorce her if it is for a legitimate religious reason. However, if he orders you to divorce her without a legitimate religious justification, you are not required to obey him in that; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani) It is obligatory for you to strive to please your father and seek his forgiveness; perhaps Allah will guide him and allow you not to divorce her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet, Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
