What is the ruling on obeying one's mother in divorcing his wife?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener: Yusuf Kalbali, of Guinean nationality, sent a very long message to Your Eminence, the Shaykh. The summary of this message is that his mother is asking him to divorce his wife without a valid reason, and he asks Your Eminence: Should he obey his mother and divorce his wife?

Answer:
If the wife is harming her, or wronging her, or is an open sinner, then you must obey the mother, or the father. But if the woman is obedient to Allah, upright in the religion of Allah, and not harmful to your parents, then you are not required to obey your father, nor your mother, in that; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
, this is how the hadith came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
A creature is not to be obeyed when it involves disobedience to the "Creator.”إنما الطاعة في المعروف، لا طاعة لمخلوق في معصية الخالق
Mishkat al-Masabih 3696
, and divorcing a woman without a reason is not obedience, nor is it what is right, but rather, at the least, it is disliked. So if the woman is upright, not harmful to the mother, nor to the father, but rather obedient to Allah, fulfilling the right of the father and the mother, then you have no right to obey them in divorcing her, and it is not required of you.
But if she is harming them with the sharpness of her tongue, or with her actions, or because she is known for sins and evil; then you should divorce her, even if they did not ask you to. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
