The second question of Fatwa number ( 12470 )
Q 2: I am ignorant in matters of my religion, so I desired to seek Islamic knowledge . I informed my family that I would go to the Islamic University in Madinah to seek knowledge, and my family lives in the city of 'Urayq , so my mother refused
that matter out of concern for me, assuming that I would not be able to live on the university stipend, which is 850 riyals. She said to me: This amount is not enough for you and your wife. At first, she was angry with me, assuming that I was unable to live on such a stipend, and assuming that I wanted to become independent from her, my brothers, and my father, since I live with them, my wife and I, in one house. After attempts to convince her, she was convinced and allowed me to go, saying: I am pleased with you. I asked my father for his opinion on this matter, so he advised me not to go, but he did not oblige me to do so, saying: I have no objection to your going if you see it in your interest. So I went to Madinah with my wife. When I visited my family during the spring break of the year 1409 AH, I seemed to notice in my father a lack of approval of my going, but he did not express anything of that to me. My conscience troubled me and I felt distress over that matter. My question is: What is obligatory for me to do in this matter? With the following observations: 1 - I have a pressing need to seek Islamic knowledge; to remove ignorance from me and myself, and out of fear for myself from the trial of money and worldly life if I worked in my father's shops. 2 - My family's financial situation is excellent, so they do not need me in this regard; in fact, my father used to spend on me and my wife when I was living
with them. My father has properties, shops, and workers who work for him. 3 - I am the eldest of my brothers, and I have three younger brothers: two of them are studying, one in the Eastern Province and the other in the Jawf region, and the third is young, not having passed the age of thirteen. My father is not old, and he is able to take my brothers to school and attend to the household needs. I ask Allah the Mighty and Majestic, then you, to issue a ruling to me on this issue: Do I continue seeking Islamic knowledge, or do I withdraw and work with my father?
A 2: Continue with your studies of the Islamic sciences, and be good to your father in word and deed, and attend to what you can of his needs when you are present with him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
