Q: I am a man who married three years ago, and I have a son and a daughter. I used to leave my wife in the family home with my father, my mother, and my sister, while I traveled between the cities of the Kingdom seeking a livelihood. A year ago, I found a job in the military sector in one of
the cities of the Kingdom. Since I did not own a means of transportation, and my son was suffering from continuous bleeding, I was forced to take my wife with me to the city where I work. However, my father cut off ties with me and was extremely angry with me, as he wants my wife and their children to be with them. I bought a car on monthly installments at a high price, then left my home and returned to my father’s house, which is 1,100 kilometers away from my work area, round trip. However, I could not continue traveling constantly, nor could I stay away from my wife, especially since I am in the prime of my youth. Also, when my daughter was born, she was afflicted with a chest illness, which forced me to devote time to taking her to hospitals for check-ups. This caused me major problems with my work, which made me forced once again to rent and furnish a house, despite my very poor financial circumstances. All of this was to supervise my children and keep my wife close to me, because I would fall into problems with dire consequences if I continued to stay away from my wife. I tried hard with my father through all direct and indirect means to have him travel with me, and I would take responsibility for providing for his livelihood, small and large, as well as for my mother and my sister. I am ready to rent a separate house for them near my house if they wish. However, all my attempts failed. My father is an elderly man, has no means of transportation, and has no ties preventing him from traveling other than his stubbornness against the idea of
traveling. I fear for him the hardships of life. Is it permissible for me to travel with my children and leave my father in his country while continuing to maintain ties with him?
A: If your father has someone to serve him—as you mentioned that his mother and sister are with him—there is no harm in taking your wife and children to your place of work, and visiting your father from time to time; based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Ibn Majah 2340Da'if (Darussalam) , and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani) . You must strive according to your ability to seek his forgiveness, and pray for his success. May Allah reform him and facilitate your affairs and the affairs of every Muslim. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
