The questioner : She said: I had vowed to Allah that if He granted me a certain matter, I would fast on Mondays and Thursdays of every week for the rest of my life. Praise be to Allah, my wish was fulfilled. However, when I began to fulfill the vow, I found it extremely difficult, especially after I joined one of the government departments. It is very difficult to combine work and fasting at the same time, especially since the weather is hot in our country. Is there a way out for me from this vow, and what is it?

The Shaykh : If a person makes a vow, first, before... before I answer this question, this program has repeatedly warned against vows and prohibited making vows, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited vows and said:
It does not (necessarily) bring good (in the form of substantial, and tangible results), but it is the meant whereby something is extracted from the miserly persons. إنه لا يأتي بخير وإنما يُستخرج به من البخيل
Sahih Muslim 1639c
This is the reality, for many of those who make vows, when they vow something and it is granted to them, fulfilling the vow becomes difficult for them. They end up knocking on the door of every scholar, hoping to find a way out, and perhaps they abandon what they vowed. Thus, they share in the reality mentioned by Allah in His saying:
(75) And among them are those who made a covenant with Allah, [saying], "If He should give us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be among the righteous." (76) But when he gave them from His bounty, they were stingy with it and turned away while they refused. (77) So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him - because they failed Allah in what they promised Him and because they [habitually] used to lie.
[At-Tawbah 9:75-77]
.
So reflect on His saying:
So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day they will meet Him فأعقبهم نفاقاً في قلوبهم إلى يوم يلقونه
[At-Tawbah 9:77]
A person must, when he falls into a situation, ask Allah the Mighty and Majestic and wait for relief from Him. He must know that Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, is Rich and Praiseworthy, and Rich and Generous. He gives without any condition being set for Him, such that it is said to Allah: "I have a vow upon me if such and such happens, I will do such and such." The Lord, Exalted and Majestic is He, gives and bestows out of His grace and kindness without any condition being set for Him.
After this, we return to the answer to the question of this woman who vowed to fast every Monday and Thursday if such and such happened to her. And it did happen to her what she vowed for. It is obligatory for her to fulfill her vow, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever vows that he will be obedient to Allah, should remain obedient to Him من نذر أن يطيع الله فليطعه
Sahih al-Bukhari 6696
This woman has vowed an act of obedience, which is fasting on Mondays and Thursdays. It is obligatory for her to fulfill this vow. This is not a disliked action such that we would say she should replace it with something else, because fasting on Mondays and Thursdays is among the prescribed matters. Yes.

The questioner : Yes.
