Q: To the honorable scholars, and after: I have an elderly father who is harsh-tempered and very fond of money. Allah took our mother when we were young children, so he married and had two daughters, then divorced her and married another woman, who is with him to this day, and he had two daughters from her. We are five brothers from our mother. We live in severe poverty, and we used to work for him and his wife without any wage for us, until we grew up, praise be to Allah, and got married. We are now in our father's house, and he lives for a period in Gaza in Palestine , but he comes every so often, demanding rent for the house from us, as if his sons were strangers, and our situation is tight. Then he asks us for money we do not know where to get from. If we do not do so, he gets angry at us and curses and insults us, saying, "May Allah be angry with you, and my heart is angry with you until the Day of Judgment." He drives us out of our homes and complains about us to the government, to the point that the court made us commit to a large sum of money. Then he started telling people, "My sons are undutiful to me," and he says that he is sick.
wants the money for treatment, until we have accumulated many debts amounting to more than 3,000 dinars. Then he started going to those who have claims on us and saying, “My sons do not give me what they take, so demand the debt from them; they are undutiful to me,” to tarnish our image before people. And we have an inheritance from our mother—may Allah have mercy on her—which he consumed for us. Whenever we tried with any of our relatives to direct him, he said, “These are my sons; no one has anything with me.” He and his wife enjoy it, while we are in poverty and debt. When one of the sheikhs or preachers comes, he starts crying and softens his speech to this preacher, saying, “I am sick and cannot work, and my sons are undutiful to me.” He shouts and cries, then when he leaves, he drives us out of the house and says, “May the curse of Allah be upon you, and my heart is angry with you.” We are unable to rent houses or build, and the situation is severe. We ask Allah for relief. If we disobey him and demand our inheritance, have we disobeyed him and been undutiful to him? What do we do, when we have not left a friend or brother or anyone else but we have borrowed from them? How will it be if we die with these debts and this tight life? We ask Allah for near relief. Inform us, may Allah reward you, and may Allah reward you with good, and guide your steps, and benefit the Ummah with you. He is the best Master and the best Helper. And our last call is that all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. And peace and blessings be upon the master of the messengers, and upon his family and all his companions.
A: We advise you to fear Allah the Exalted and to be patient with the harm that comes to you
from your father. You are on the right path, if Allah wills. Increase your supplication for him. If you can, have some relatives or those who have a status with your father mediate to resolve the problem, or seek the help of some people of goodness and religion—that is good. We ask Allah to guide your father to the truth, to reform him, to unite your hearts on good, and to reconcile between you. He is the All-Hearing, the Near, the Responsive. And success is from Allah. May Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
