My father married a woman other than my mother, so my mother began to stir up problems and fitnah for us and for my father, which forced my father to leave the house with his wife.

The questioner : My mother is still alive, and my father married another woman, but she is bad in her treatment of us and of our father. She has stirred up a lot of fitnah and problems between us and our father, to the point that she caused separation between us, until he and his other wife and her children moved to another house and cut us off from everything. She even curses my father and insults him. She has made me hate her greatly, and sometimes I call for death upon her and upon myself. Is there a sin on me for that? And what is upon her for her action?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. There is no doubt that aggression against a Muslim, especially one with whom you have a bond, is forbidden and not permissible. No one is allowed to aggress against his Muslim brother with harm, whether by word or deed, because Allah the Exalted said:
And those who harm believing men and believing women for [something] other than what they have earned have certainly born upon themselves a slander and manifest sin. والذين يؤذون المؤمنين والمؤمنات بغير ما اكتسبوا فقد احتملوا بهتانا وإثما مبينا
[Al-Ahzab 33:58]
It is obligatory for her, and for you as well, to have love and affection, and to avoid dispute and quarreling, and to remove from your hearts any grudges, resentment, and hatred. It is amazing to a person that this should come from a mother toward her children, or from a wife toward her husband. But guidance is in the hand of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). You must start life anew and advise your mother for what is good and right, so that you do not force the father to leave with his new wife and her children. If it is possible to restore things to their proper course, and for the father to return to his first home, and for you all to live together in one happy home, then that is the better course. As for what you mentioned about calling for death upon yourself and upon her, that is haram and not permissible, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
None of you should wish for death because of some harm that befalls him لا يتمنين أحدكم الموت لضر نزل به
Sunan an-Nasa'i 1820Sahih (Darussalam)
So you must be patient, count it as a reward, and ask Allah for guidance for your mother. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) turns hearts as He wills, and if His wisdom dictates that the mother returns to what is obligatory upon her, then that is possible and not difficult for Allah. So, my brother, be patient and make much du'a' that Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) will guide your mother to what is good and to reconciliation and unity.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
