Q: I have known since I was young that I have a brother through breastfeeding; therefore, now that I have grown up, I do not wear my hijab in front of him. However, I learned from my mother, by chance, that he breastfed five times or more, but not satiatingly; because he would breastfeed from her immediately after breastfeeding from his mother, and I breastfed from his mother one time, but it was satiating. Please inform us, may Allah reward you. Is he my brother or not? And may Allah reward you all with good and reward you with abundant reward.
A: The breastfeeding that makes marriage forbidden is five breastfeedings or more within the two-year period. If the breastfeeding mentioned from your mother was like that, then he is your mother’s son and your brother and your sisters’ brother through breastfeeding, and it is permissible for you to uncover your hijab in his presence. Allah the Exalted said:[An-Nisa 4:23] up to His saying: [An-Nisa 4:23] , and Allah the Exalted said:
[Al-Baqarah 2:233] , and it is established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sahih al-Bukhari 3105 , and it is established from the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: “What was revealed in the Qur’an was: ‘Ten known breastfeedings make marriage forbidden,’ then it was abrogated by: ‘Five known breastfeedings.’ The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while the matter was still as such. Know that a breastfeeding is: the child holding the breast and then sucking milk from it. If he leaves it and returns and sucks milk, it is a second breastfeeding, and so on. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.”

وَأَخَوَاتُكُمْ مِنَ الرَّضَاعَةِMothers may breastfeed their children two complete years
وَالْوَالِدَاتُ يُرْضِعْنَ أَوْلادَهُنَّ حَوْلَيْنِ كَامِلَيْنِWhat is rendered illegal because of blood relations, is also rendered illegal because of the corresponding foster-relations.
