The first and fourth questions of Fatwa number ( 18884 )
Q1: I am a young man who prays Fajr in congregation. My problem is that after I pray Fajr, I take the mushaf to read the Qur'an, and before I realize it, I am asleep with the mushaf open in my hand. Do you have a solution or a remedy for this problem of mine? Knowing that when I feel myself getting sleepy, I go home to sleep, since the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Please advise us, and may Allah reward you.
A1: Sitting after the Fajr prayer to engage in the morning remembrances and reading the Qur'an is among the sunnahs (recommended practices) that a Muslim should strive to observe. What helps in this is firm resolve and sleeping early in the first part of the night after the 'Isha' prayer, for this is part of the guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Q4: Is it true that istighfar (seeking forgiveness) is not valid unless one reflects on what one is saying, such as Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar, and likewise when reading the Qur'an?
A4: Whenever a person is present in heart, reflecting on what he is saying and contemplating its meanings during dhikr (remembrance of Allah) and reading the Qur'an, that is better, greater in reward, more blessed, closer to being answered, and more effective in affecting the soul and preventing it from sins and transgressions.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
