Fatwa No. ( 17890 )
Q: We are attaching a copy of the Shield of the Jushn , asking Your Eminence to read it and give your opinion on several points, which are: A - Does this shield actually exist in the primary books? 2 - Did the narrators of the shield, Ja'far al-Sadiq , the Commander of the Faithful 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and his son al-Hasan , actually narrate this text, or is this text the composition of someone other than these people? 3 - What is Your Eminence's opinion on reading it without adopting it as a shield, like a supplication for example; because of the names and attributes of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) contained in it? 4 - Is there a sin on me if I keep it? And is there a sin on me if I burn it and get rid of it? Please inform us, may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: This shield called (the Shield of the Jushn) is not permissible to possess, nor to act upon it, nor to believe what is mentioned in it, and that is for the following reasons: First: It has no known chain of narration, and none of the recognized scholars of hadith has traced it to its sources, nor attributed it to any of them.
It is not attributed to any of them. Second: It contains much falsehood, such as its statement on page (1): (Whoever reads it and carries it when he leaves his house at the time of dawn or the time of 'Isha', he is granted good deeds, as if he had read the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Great Qur'an). It equates reading it with reading the books of Allah, and this is the most false of falsehoods, for nothing is equal to the books of Allah. Then it says: (And Allah will give him for every letter he reads two pairs of the Houriyyat al-'In, and build for him a palace in Paradise, and Allah will give him the reward of four of the prophets (peace be upon them): Ibrahim, Musa, 'Isa, and Muhammad). This is an apparent lie, for the reward of the prophets is not attained by anyone other than them. And on page: (2) it says: (Allah will give him the reward of the believing men and believing women of the jinn and humans from the day He created them until the Day of Resurrection, and Allah will give him the reward of nine hundred thousand martyrs). Then it increased in falsehood in the pages that follow. Third: And on page (5) it says: (This supplication is beneficial for love and acceptance, binding of tongues, meeting the ruler, princes, and sultans, and repelling all iron and lead weapons, and fulfilling needs... etc.), and it appears to be from the composition of the Shi'ah to divert people from the Book and the Sunnah.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
