Fatwa No. ( 18935 )
All praise is due to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the questioner, Jamal Jamil Mansouri, Director of Air Service Procedures at Saudi Arabian Airlines, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars with number (3065) and date 10 \ 6 \ 1417 AH. The questioner asked a question, the text of which is: I inform Your Eminence that the travel supplication currently broadcast on Saudi Airlines flights is as follows: “Ladies and gentlemen, you will now hear the travel supplication: Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest. Glory be to Him who has subjected this to us, and we could not have subjected it to ourselves. And indeed, to our Lord we shall return. O Allah, we ask You in this journey of ours for righteousness and piety, and of deeds what You are pleased with. O Allah, make this journey easy for us and shorten the distance for us. O Allah, You are the Companion in the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah, we seek refuge in You from the hardship of the journey, the sadness of the appearance, and the bad turn of events in wealth and family.” I seek Your Eminence’s permission to suggest that the announcement be in the following manner:
“Ladies and gentlemen, we are now listening to the travel supplication, which is from the noble Prophetic supplications that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say when beginning his journey:
he glorified Allah (uttered Allah-o-Akbar) thrice, and then said: Hallowed is He Who subdued for us this (ride) and we were not ourselves powerful enough to use It as a ride, and we are going to return to our Lord. O Allah, we seek virtue and piety from Thee in this journey of ours and the act which pleaseth Thee. O Allah, lighten this journey of ours, and make its distance easy for us. O Allah, Thou art (our) companion during the journey, and guardian of (our) family. O Allah, I seek refuge with Thee from hardships of the journey, gloominess of the sights, and finding of evil changes in property and family on return.
Sahih Muslim 1342
. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he returned from his journey, would say these and add to them:
Returning, repenting, worshipping, praising our Lord. O Allah, by You we return, by You we go forth, and by You we travelآيبون تائبون عابدون لربنا حامدون، اللهم بك نصول وبك نجول وبك نسير
. In the name of Allah is its sailing and its anchoring. Indeed, my Lord is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. And they did not estimate Allah as He should be estimated, and the earth all is in His Hand on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens are folded in His Right Hand. Exalted is He above what they associate with Him. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our master Muhammad and his family and his companions. And of course, the phrase “and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our master Muhammad and his family and his companions” is not part of the hadith text, but the supplication without it seems truncated. Then it would be for the person broadcasting the supplication
as a conclusion to the announcement. Do you prefer, Your Eminence, the version currently broadcast or the proposed version? And if Your Eminence has a third version that you consider more appropriate, please be kind enough to clarify it for us so that we can broadcast it on the airplane. May Allah bless you and reward you with the best reward.

After the Committee’s study of the inquiry, it answered that the supplication mentioned in the question, which is currently announced on the airplane at the beginning of the journey in the form mentioned, is a good, prescribed, and authentic supplication from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). However, it is more appropriate to delete the words “Ladies and gentlemen” and replace them with the words “My brothers and sisters.” And the introduction you mentioned is not necessary. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his companions.
