Q: Among the things we used in treatment is the letter that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wrote for the Companion Abu Dujanah when he came to him complaining of harm in his home from the jinn . I found this letter in a book by my brother Majdi al-Shahawi, titled (Divine Treatment for Sorcery and Satanic Possession), and also in the book: (Dialogue with the Jinn) by the journalist Usamah al-Karam. This is the hadith. The noble Companion Abu Dujanah said: "I complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah, while I was lying in my bed, I heard in my house a creaking like the creaking of a millstone, a buzzing like the buzzing of bees, and a flash like the flash of lightning. I raised my head in fear and terror, and there was a black shadow hanging down, rising and lengthening in the courtyard of my house. I reached out and touched its skin, and its skin was like the skin of a porcupine. It threw something like sparks of fire in my face, and I thought it had burned me and burned my house. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (Your house is full
of evil, O Abu Dujanah , and by the Ka'bah, and you are being harmed, O Abu Dujanah ). Then he said: (Bring me ink and paper). They brought them to him, and he handed them to Ali ibn Abi Talib and said: (Write, O Abu al-Hasan ). He said: What should I write? He said: (Write: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. This is a letter from Muhammad, the Messenger of the Lord of the Worlds, to whoever knocks on the door of the residents and visitors. As for what follows: We have strength in the truth for ourselves and for you. If you are a passionate lover or a sinner who breaks through, or one who claims a false truth, this is the Book of Allah which speaks the truth to us and to you. We used to copy what you used to do, and our messengers write what you conceal. Leave the owner of this letter and go to the worshippers of idols and to those who claim that there is another god besides Allah. There is no god but He; all things will perish except His Face. His is the judgment, and to Him you will return. You will be overcome. Ha. You will not be victorious. Ha Meem Sa Qaf. The enemies of Allah are scattered, and the proof of Allah has reached. There is no power and no strength except with Allah. So Allah will suffice you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing). Abu Dujanah said: So I rolled it up and carried it to my house, and I placed it under my head and spent my night. I did not wake up except to the scream of a screamer saying: O Abu Dujanah , the words have burned us. By the right of your companion, remove this book from us, and we will not return to your house. And another said: Nor to your harm, nor to your neighborhood, nor to a place where this book is. Abu Dujanah said: I said: No, by the right of my companion, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), I will not remove it until I seek the permission of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Abu Dujanah said: My night was long for me because of what I heard of the moaning
of the jinn and their screaming and their weeping, until I became morning and I prayed the Fajr prayer with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). I informed him of what I heard from the jinn and what I said to them. He said to me: (O Abu Dujanah , remove it from the people. By Him who sent me with the truth as a prophet, they will find the pain of punishment until the Day of Resurrection). It was narrated by al-Bayhaqi in (Dalail al-Nubuwwah) 7/120, and also al-Suyuti narrated it as I found it. I was surprised when one of the trustworthy brothers informed me that this hadith is fabricated. Because I found that this letter has a great effect on the jinn through my practice of treatment, where I saw that the patient feels dizziness when he looks at it, or he gets numbness in the hand that holds the letter. And it happened to me with an epileptic patient simply by giving him the letter to carry. For this and that reason, I thought to place the matter before the hands of the father, the Shaykh (may Allah preserve him), in my question about the authenticity of this hadith, and the ruling on acting with this letter in treatment, and in some medical cases where treatment is difficult for doctors. We recite verses of ruqyah over them many times without any effect appearing on them, so we discovered a method of addressing the companion (qarin) of the sick person, and through it the disease is known. Many cases have been treated with this method, which is: we ask the patient to repeat: In the name of Allah, the First and the Last, with the inhalation, then after a period we speak to the qarin and dialogue with him. My question is: Our information about the qarin is very little due to the lack of
sufficient evidence that speaks about it. For example: Is it inside the body or outside it? What is the duration of its stay with the patient (human)? Does every human have one qarin, or is it possible that it changes in some periods? Does it remain attached to the human, or does it leave him sometimes and return to him? And very often it is mentioned that the age of the (qarin) is younger than the age of the patient. My great request from the magnanimity of the father, the Shaykh, is to answer these questions in writing so that Allah may benefit the Muslims with it. So inform us and issue a ruling for us.
A: The hadith mentioned in the question, the scholar al-Suyuti said in his book (Al-La'ali al-Masnu'ah fi al-Ahadith al-Mawdu'ah), Part Two, page (348): The hadith is fabricated, its chain is broken, most of its narrators are unknown, and there is no one named Musa among the Companions. End of quote. Therefore, it is not permissible to rely on this hadith. The lawful ruqyah is with Surat al-Fatihah, Ayat al-Kursi, Surat al-Ikhlas, the two Mu'awwidhat, the Qur'anic verses, and the Prophetic supplications established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is not permissible to seek help from the jinn which you call the qarin, and to ask it about the type of the patient's disease; because seeking help from the jinn is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah (Mighty and Majestic). So it is obligatory upon you to repent to Allah from that and to leave this method and to restrict yourselves to the lawful ruqyah. May Allah guide everyone to what He is pleased with.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
