Wearing Tight Clothing for Women
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first, second, and fourth questions of Fatwa No. ( 17007 )
Q1: Is it permissible for a woman to wear tight clothing that reveals her back, breasts, and waist, which displays the woman's beauty, and which exposes the arms, neck, and part of the chest in front of women and mahrams? And is it permissible to wear tight clothing in front of women only, whether they are mahrams or other non-mahram Muslim women?
A1: This question has two parts. The first is regarding a woman wearing tight clothing that outlines her body parts. It is known from the texts and rules of the Shari'ah that it is a condition for the clothing of a Muslim woman that it be loose and baggy, not tight. This is what aligns with the purpose of clothing, which is: covering, and shielding the woman's body from the gaze of non-mahrams to prevent fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and corruption. Tight clothing contradicts these Shari'ah objectives because it reveals the size of the body and its parts, so the intended purpose of covering is not achieved; rather, it may be more likely to cause fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and attraction. Therefore, it is forbidden (haram) for a Muslim woman to wear tight clothing in front of her mahrams other than her husband, and it is forbidden for her in front of women if it is from the navel to the knee, like pants, or if it covers her entire body but causes fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and arousal among women. The second part of the question is regarding what she is permitted to display of her adornment in front of her mahrams other than her husband. That is: her face, her hands, her anklets, her earrings, her bracelets, her necklace, her head, and her feet.
