The first question of Fatwa No. ( 20606 )
Q 1: I inform your Eminence that I work as the director of a school complex in one of the villages belonging to the region of al-Madinah al-Munawwarah, praise be to Allah. What I am clarifying to your Eminence is: the residents of this village are Bedouins who belong to Arab tribes, and they are distinguished by their generosity and bravery. They take the initiative to invite me, either to lunch or dinner. If I refuse, they send the slaughtered animal to the house where I live in the village, and they say: "This is your right, you and your fellow teachers." I am afraid that this may be a type of bribery, knowing that the one who invites me has children in the school, or works in the school as a student transporter, or seeks to get close to me because I am the director, and some of them have no business at all. Do I
refuse these invitations and not accept them? Since I find this matter to be a source of annoyance.
A 1: It is not permissible for an employee to take anything from the gifts and presents of the visitors, and the same applies to the school director; it is not permissible for him to accept gifts from the students or their parents, because all of that is from the forbidden embezzlement (ghulul). It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: , and that is because accepting them is a means to injustice and fulfilling requests without right. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
