Q: In the city of ( al-Bada' ) in the Tabuk region, there are ancient ruins and dwellings carved into the mountains. Some people mention that these are the dwellings of the people of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him). The question is: Is it established that these are the dwellings of the people of Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), or is it not established? And what is the ruling on visiting those ruins for one whose intention is sightseeing and looking around , and for one whose intention is taking a lesson and being admonished?
A: It is well known among the historians thatthe dwellings of (Madyan), among whom the Prophet of Allah, Shu'ayb (peace be upon him), was sent, are in the northwestern part ofthe Arabian Peninsula, which is now called: (al-Bad') and its surroundings, and Allah knows best the true state of affairs. If this is correct, then it is not permissible to visit these places for the purpose of sightseeing or inspection; because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by al-Hijr—which is the dwelling place of Thamud—he said: [H1] Then he covered his head and hastened his pace until he had crossed the valley. Al-Bukhari narrated it in his Sahih from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). In another narration from him: [H2]. Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, while mentioning the benefits and rulings derived from the Battle of Tabuk: (Among them: that whoever passes by the dwellings of those upon whom the anger of Allah has fallen and who were punished, it is not befitting for him to enter them or stay in them, but rather he should hasten his pace and cover his head with his garment until he has passed them, and he should not enter them except weeping and taking a lesson. And of this is the hastening of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in his pace in Wadi Muhassir between Mina and Muzdalifah, for it is the place where Allah destroyed the elephant and its companions) (Zad al-Ma'ad 3/560). And al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in the course of his explanation of the aforementioned hadith: (And this encompasses the dwellings of Thamud and others who are of their description, even if the cause was mentioned regarding them) (Fath al-Bari 6/380). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.by al-Hijr- and they are: the dwellingsThamud- he said:Sahih al-Bukhari 4419 Then he covered his head and hastened his pace until he had passed the valley. It was narrated byal-Bukhariin (his Sahih) from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). And in another narration from him as well:Sahih al-Bukhari 4420. He saidIbn al-Qayyim(may Allah have mercy on him), while mentioning the benefits and rulings derived from the expedition ofTabuk : ( Among these is that if one passes by the dwellings of those upon whom the anger of Allah has been invoked and those who were punished, he should not enter them or stay in them, but rather he should hasten his journey and cover his head with his garment until he has passed beyond them, and he should not enter them except while weeping and taking a lesson. This is why the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) hastened his journey inWadi MuhassirbetweenMinaand Muzdalifah, for it is the place where Allah destroyed the elephant and its companions) (Zad al-Ma'ad 3 \ 560). And saidal-Hafiz Ibn Hajar(may Allah have mercy on him), in the course of his explanation of the aforementioned hadith: (And this encompassesdwellingsThamudand others like them in description, even though the cause was mentioned regarding them) (Fath al-Bari 6 \ 380). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
