Looking at a Mahram
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 18442 )
Q: I am a young man of sixteen years old, living in Zarqa city in Jordan, I maintain, praise and thanks be to Allah, the five daily prayers in congregation, and I am consistent in reading the Noble Qur'an, but Allah Mighty and Majestic has decreed for me that I am weak against the desire of my gaze, so I try to stay away as much as possible from looking at what my eye desires to look at, and I call upon Allah to turn me away from it, but I find myself weak and inclined to this matter. I performed 'Umrah a year ago, and this matter was not in me, and after that I became as I mentioned previously. I performed 'Umrah this year, and I called upon Allah sincerely, and I committed to what I committed to, but after my return I found myself still weak. What is the solution in your opinion, Your Eminence? I am seriously thinking of gouging out one of my eyes; perhaps I will learn something from this lesson.
Help us with your advice to us.
A: It is obligatory for you to refrain from looking at what Allah the Exalted has forbidden you to look at, and to feel remorse for what came from you, along with repentance and the resolve not to return to such things. What you mentioned about your inability to do so is from the seduction of Satan and his deception of you. Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, when He commanded His servants to lower their gazes and guard their private parts, did not burden them except with what they can bear. He said:[Al-Baqarah 2:286] . We advise you in this to stay away from places of temptation and arousal of desire. It is not permissible for you to intentionally harm yourself by gouging out your eye to get rid of the dominance of the soul that commands evil and the seduction of Satan. Rather, seek help from Allah the Exalted, and ask Him to grant you well-being, and resolve firmly to abandon the forbidden things. Know that the scheme of Satan is weak. He said: [An-Nisa 4:76] . And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
