Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 16097 )
Q4: Whatis the ruling on one who severs family ties, and whatis the ruling on a false witness, and what is the evidence for that?
A 4: Severing family ties and false testimony are both among the major sins. Allah the Exalted said:
If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise].
[An-Nisa 4:31]
The evidence that severing family ties is among the major sins is His saying:
(22) So would you perhaps, if you turned away, cause corruption on earth and sever your [ties of] relationship? (23) Those [who do so] are the ones that Allah hasفَهَلْ عَسَيْتُمْ إِنْ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ أَنْ تُفْسِدُوا فِي الأَرْضِ وَتُقَطِّعُوا أَرْحَامَكُمْ (22) أُولَئِكَ الَّذِينَ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ
[Muhammad 47:22-23]
the verse. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Should I not inform you about the most grievous of the grave sins? (The Holy Prophet) repeated it three times, and then said: Associating anyone with Allah, disobedience to parents, false testimony or false utterance. The Prophet was reclining, then he sat up, and he repeated it so many times that we wished that he should become silent.

and Muslim. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
