Does one visit his brother who earns from forbidden matters?

Fatwa No. ( 1391 )
Q: A man’s brother works in the engineering and repair of recorders and radios, and when he came to Riyadh , he was hesitant to stay with him or eat and drink at his place because of his profession, so he stayed with a relative. He is angry about this and asks for our opinion on the matter.
A : It is not hidden that maintaining ties with relatives is something Allah has commanded, and the fact that my brother
works in the engineering of recorders and radios may not be a valid reason for avoiding him and keeping his distance, and preferring others over him in housing and benefit, when he is more deserving of the questioner than others. It is not hidden that recorders and radios are not pure evil nor pure good, but rather they are tools used for pure good, pure evil, or both, and their good or evil becomes clear from their user. Given that the questioner's connection with his brother and living with him involves the benefit of communication, closeness, and affection, and that the absence of this leads to the opposite, and since recorders and radios are a source of both good and evil, and none of that is realized except through the one who uses them, it is not befitting to abandon a realized benefit—which is the tie and closeness—for a suspected harm—which is the use of the recorder and radio in what causes harm. Furthermore, since the Islamic Shari'ah aims to realize benefits and increase them, and to avert harms and reduce them, and to commit the lesser of two harms to avoid the greater of them, the questioner should maintain ties with his brother and be close to him, and not prefer others over him for the reasons mentioned, while advising him to leave this profession which is a source of aiding in evil. Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, Allah will replace it with something better. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
