The Status of Maintaining Family Ties in Islam

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 10795 )
Q: Maintaining family ties is an individual obligation for every Muslim, but there is a problem that prevents the performance of this obligation found in the Book and the Sunnah. For example, when I visit my uncle, I am forced to encounter his wife and daughter in a state of tabarruj (display of adornment), and worse still, I am forced to sit in the same room where they are in this state. The same applies to the rest of the relatives. I am currently severing this tie until a response is received. Therefore, I ask you, O honorable Shaykh, to issue a ruling for me as soon as possible.
A : Maintaining family ties is obligatory, and severing them is forbidden; this is based on the established evidence from the Book and the Sunnah. If maintaining the tie leads to the occurrence of what is wrong, then if you are able to change it, you must attend to maintain the family tie and to change what is wrong. If you are unable to change what is wrong, then refrain from visiting in the place where the wrong occurs, and maintain your family ties in other ways.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
