Maintaining Ties with Those Who Sever Family Bonds

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 8344 )
Q: A misunderstanding arose between me and my relatives after a strong friendship, and they are my cousins and kin at the same time. It developed into a severance between us, to the point that my children do not know their maternal grandfather, and the women in our family think there is enmity between us because of this severance. I visit them, but they do not visit us. So, is there a sin on me if I sever ties with them? Even though they do not return the visit, and they have severed their ties with us despite the kinship for 14 years. Please inform us.
A : Maintaining family ties is obligatory, and severing them is among the major sins. Allah the Exalted said:
Worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, and to parents do good, and to relatives
[An-Nisa 4:36]
And He said:
And your Lord has decreed that you not worship except Him, and to parents, good treatment
[Al-Isra 17:23]
until He said:
(26) And give the relative his right, and [also] the poor and the traveler, and do not spend wastefully. (27) Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful. (28) And if you [must] turn away from the needy awaiting mercy from your Lord which you expect, then speak to them a gentle word.
[Al-Isra 17:26-28]
the verses.
And from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who likes that his sustenance should be expanded and his age may be lengthened should join the tie of kinship.
Sahih Muslim 2557b
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . And from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who said:
Al-Wasil is not the one who recompenses the good done to him by his relatives, but Al-Wasil is the one who keeps good relations with those relatives who had severed the bond of kinship with him.
Sahih al-Bukhari 5991
Narrated by al-Bukhari. And from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The tie of kinship is suspended to the Throne and says: He who unites me Allah would unite him and he who severed me Allah would sever him.
Sahih Muslim 2555
Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . The verses and hadiths encouraging the maintenance of family ties and warning against severing them are numerous. So you must maintain ties with your relatives as much as you are able, even if they sever ties with you, and you must be good to them even if they are bad to you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
