Fatwa number ( 20564 )
Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon the one after whom there is no prophet. And after: The Permanent Committee for Scholarly Research and Ifta has reviewed what was sent to His Eminence the Grand Mufti from the honorable director of the Cooperative Office for Da'wah, Guidance, and Community Awareness in al-Ghat , number (55/1) and dated 25/7/1419 AH, and referred to the Committee by the General Secretariat of the Council of Senior Scholars, number (4897) and dated 9/8/1419 AH. The inquirer asked a question, the text of which is as follows: Some brothers ask the following question: (If I know that one of the Muslims goes to sorcerers and magicians to seek treatment from them , and takes treatment from them and visits them from time to time, what is obligatory for me regarding this person? Is it permissible to sit, eat, and drink with him, or is it obligatory for me to boycott him and warn the Muslims against him? Knowing that this matter has spread rapidly among people. We ask Allah for well-being and safety).
After the Committee studied the inquiry, it answered as follows: It is not permissible to go to sorcerers and magicians, ask them questions, or believe them; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who visits a diviner ('Arraf) and asks him about anything, his prayers extending to forty nights will not be accepted.من أتى عرافًا فسأله عن شيء لم تقبل له صلاة أربعين ليلة
Sahih Muslim 2230
, and in another hadith:
Whoever goes to a fortune-teller or a diviner and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammadمن أتى كاهنًا أو عرافًا فصدقه بما يقول فقد كفر بما أُنزل على محمد
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741
(peace and blessings be upon him). It is obligatory to report sorcerers and magicians to the authorities; to deter them and take action against them, and to advise the one who goes to them, ordering him to repent to Allah. If he does not comply, it is obligatory to boycott him until he repents to Allah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions.
