Fatwa No. ( 21189 )
Q: What is the ruling on sitting with a sorcerer and asking him to display some of his sorcery before people, then commenting on and refuting the sorcerer and exposing the falsehood of sorcerers? The intention behind this is for people to be aware of the reality of the sorcerer and to refute him? May Allah reward you with good.
A : It is not permissible to sit with a sorcerer or ask him to display some of his sorcery, even if the intention is good, for the sake of commenting on the invalidity of his sorcery and refuting him, and informing people of the reality of his affair. This is due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Sahih Muslim 2230 It was narrated by Muslim in his (Sahih), and the term: (the diviner) encompasses the soothsayer, the astrologer, and the sorcerer. And due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): It was narrated by al-Tabarani from 'Imran ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him). Al-Munawi said: Its chain of narration is good. And because sorcery is among the forbidden acts of disbelief that expel its practitioner from the religion. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded to avoid it absolutely. Therefore, it is not permissible to invite the sorcerer in the manner described, because of the promotion of his falsehood and the call to his defective work that is in that. The sorcerer may have deception, confusion, playing with minds, and diabolical tricks that deceive those with weak hearts and the ignorant, because they are not convinced by the refutation against him. And the refutation may not be as strong as the sorcerer's acts of disbelief, so his sorcery may affect even the refuter himself, and consequences that are not to be praised may occur. The obligatory thing is to forbid what is wrong. Whoever knows of a sorcerer must warn people against him and inform the competent authorities so that he may receive a deterrent punishment and his evil may be kept away from people. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
