Q: My grandmother gave me a gift during her lifetime, and then she passed away. I grieved greatly for her because she had raised me from my birth. So I vowed to my cousin’s son and said to him: I vow before Allah that I will make all that my grandmother gave me charity for her. After a few days passed, I remembered that I have some debts, and it will take a long time to pay them to their owners. Therefore, I ask our honorable shaykhs
whether it is possible for me to pay my debt with some of this money after I vowed to my cousin’s son, and is there an expiation for such a situation?
A: You must pay the debts you owe and expiate the oath you swore to give charity on behalf of your grandmother. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
