Q: Allah decreed that a car accident happened to me. I was driving my car with my father and my sister, and both of them passed away in this accident. The driver of the oncoming car and his companion also died on the spot. As a result of the investigation and the traffic inspection, I was held fully responsible for the error. How much blood money (diyah) am I required to pay for the deceased? I went to my wealthy cousins for help, but they refused on the grounds that I am ignorant and that they are not obligated to help me. I hope you will kindly inform me of the expiation and blood money required by this ruling, and what duty my cousins have toward their cousin, and up to which degree of kinship does this blood money obligation extend?
A: If the matter is as you described, it is obligatory for you to perform the expiation for the error for each person who died in the accident. The expiation is freeing a believing slave; if you cannot find one, then you must fast for two consecutive months. As for the blood money, you should refer to the court regarding it.
