Q: An accident occurred in which my car overturned because I fell asleep, after the will of Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) , and the following resulted from the accident: my wife died immediately; my mother was in a coma as a result of the accident for two months, then she recovered, spoke, and understood everything, but then she suffered other complications in her chest, specifically phlegm, and she passed away three months after the accident, while she was still in the hospital and had not been discharged. The question: What is required of me regarding the two lives: the first, which ended immediately, and the second, which lasted three months while she was still alive? If an expiation is required of me.
A: It is obligatory for you to perform two expiations for causing the deaths of your wife and your mother. The expiation for each one is freeing a believing slave. If you do not find one,
you must fast for two consecutive months. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
