Fatwa No. ( 4085 )
Q: I inform your Eminence that about eight months ago I was smoking shisha, and one night afterwards I suffered a stroke as a result of it and I swore by the Great Allah that I would not smoke it until a limit in my mind. After a short while, I said, “May Allah forbid it to me regarding my children, meaning my wife, if I smoke it until a limit in my mind.” The limit I mean is repairing my farm and my house, but until now I have not finished repairing my farm. In one of the recent nights, I promised workers at the coffee shop and waited for about two hours. The shisha was nearby and people were smoking, and I could not control myself, so I asked for one and smoked it after a struggle with myself. Therefore, I ask you to give me a ruling on this as soon as possible, and whether there is any sin if I proceed to smoke it a second time, since I may not be able to quit it.
A1: First: It is not permissible for you to smoke shisha because of its impurity, the health, social, and economic harms it contains, and the evidence that has come regarding it.
Second: You owe an expiation for an oath for forbidding your family if you smoke it, and for your oath by Allah not to smoke it; because such a prohibition is in the ruling of an oath. Its expiation is feeding ten poor people, giving each of them half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the local staple food, such as rice or otherwise, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do that, then fast three days, and it is better if they are consecutive. I advise you to be cautious about returning to smoking it, and about obeying the self, Satan, and bad companions. May Allah guide you to what is right and protect you from the evil of your self and Satan. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
