Fatwa number ( 14777 )
Q: I am a married woman with children, and I am religious, praise be to Allah, but my husband smokes shisha. I advised him, but it did not work with him; rather, he swore by Allah that he would quit it, but he has not quit it yet. I also swore by Allah that if he does not quit it, I will go to my parents' home. He has not quit it, and I have not gone to my parents' home. What should I do with him? What is the ruling on my oath? And what is the ruling on smoking shisha? I ask your eminence to be generous in replying to this message.
A: First : It is forbidden to smoke shisha; because it is among the impure things, and because of the many harms it contains. Second : It is obligatory for your husband to fulfill his oath and to stop smoking shisha. Third : You did well in advising your husband and forbidding him from smoking shisha. You must continue advising him and making du'a for him, perhaps Allah will guide him. As for your oath, you must expiate it with the expiation of an oath, and do not go to your parents' home.
The expiation is: feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a believing slave. If you cannot do that, then fast for three days. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
