Placing newspapers on the table for a meal and eating on them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The seventh question of Fatwa No. ( 8820 )
Q 7: Do you consider it blameworthy to tear up letters and papers that contain (Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim) or verses or hadiths or the beautiful names of Allah? Sometimes I have a large quantity of them, so I burn them. Sometimes I cannot burn them, for example in the office, so I erase the verses or names from them with a pen, and then I tear them up. Is there any blame in that? And more than that, newspapers come in with verses and hadiths and other things, and then they are placed on the table and after eating, they are thrown into the trash bin with the food scraps. Is that permissible?
A 7: If the papers contain the Basmalah or a verse or verses from the Qur'an or hadiths, it is not permissible to eat on them or throw them in the trash or filth. Rather, they should be burned or buried in a place far from filth and people's pathways, or torn up in a way that removes the signs of the Basmalah, verses, and hadiths, and there is no blame in that. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
