Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 12879 )
Q: Your Eminence, it was reported from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was teaching a boy, that he said:
Dear child, mention Allah's Name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is next to you.يا غلام سم الله وكل بيمينك وكل مما يليك
Bulugh al-Maram 8:98
or as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. It was also reported in the hadith regarding ablution, and Allah knows best whether the formula is "Bismillah" or the complete phrase "Bismillah al-Rahman al-Rahim." Please inform us, may Allah reward you.

A: The guidance of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when beginning to eat from food is to say: "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah), as established in the hadith of 'Amr ibn al-Salamah who said: "I was a boy in the care of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and my hands would dart about in the dish, so he said to me:
Dear child, mention Allah's Name, eat with your right hand, and eat from what is next to you.يا غلام سم الله وكل بيمينك وكل مما يليك
Bulugh al-Maram 8:98
. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
