The Ruling on Cologne and Alcohol for Medical Purposes
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 3448 )
Q: Is it permissible to use perfumes, deodorants, toothpaste, ice cream, and shampoo because they contain alcohol, and soap that contains pork fat? Is wine impure like urine? And what about meat if it is mixed with pork fat or blood, even in a very small proportion, and cheese? I ask you to issue a ruling for me because I am sent to study in America , and
a Muslim American student warned us about that.
A: The original ruling for things is permissibility and purity, so it is not permissible for a person to rule that something is forbidden and impure except with a legal proof. If you are certain or it is more likely in your view that permissible meat has been mixed with pork fat or blood, and likewise cheese if it is mixed with pork fat or blood, it is not permissible for you to consume it. The Qur'an, the Sunnah, and scholarly consensus have indicated the prohibition of pork meat, and the scholars agreed that its fat has the same ruling as the meat. However, if you do not know, it is permissible to eat from it; as mentioned earlier, the original ruling for things is permissibility until a proof of prohibition is established. As for perfumes and the like in which alcohol has been mixed until it reaches the level of intoxication, the ruling on their impurity or purity is based on the ruling on the impurity or purity of wine, and the majority hold the view that it is impure. Accordingly, it is obligatory to avoid them if they reach the level of intoxication due to the alcohol mixed into them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
