Fatwa number ( 20892 )
Q: One day, I went to get water in a small truck, and my two children were with me. The older one was eight years old, and the younger was five years and six months old. After arriving at the well from which I draw water, I stopped near the well at a distance of two meters. Then I got out to start the motor that pumps the water into the truck. The children had gotten out and were far from the truck. This is a continuous habit of stopping the truck, as well as their getting out to play on the ground. After filling the truck, I found one of the children carrying a piece of firewood on the back of the truck. Then I got out to carry the motor to load it onto the truck. While I was in this state, I suddenly heard the truck's horn honking, so I rushed up, but I could not do anything. The truck moved until it fell completely into the well, and the two boys died by drowning, and Allah is the Helper. Do I have to pay an expiation because I forgot the key in the car? I am attached to the car, and its number and registration are not good; because I am far from what happened, but it is the decree of Allah, and is
there a blood money due if the mother specifically asks for blood money?

A: You must pay the expiation for accidental killing, which is freeing a slave for each of the two boys who died in the accident. If you cannot find one, you must fast two consecutive months, sixty days, for each of them; because you were negligent in leaving the key in the car and not closing its doors. As for the issue of blood money, looking into it is the exclusive jurisdiction of the court. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
