Q1: A problem arose between me and my wife, and the cause was her leaving the house—while I was not present—to the market with her family, and this angered me. When I learned that she had gone to the market, I said to her: Do not go out a second time, and if you go to the market, do not return to the house; go to your family's house. By this statement, I meant that if she returns to going out to the market, she is divorced. This is what was in my heart. Now I do not know if her going out with me to the market falls under the ruling, which is divorce, and I did not intend by my first statement anything other than her going out with someone other than me from her family. Knowing that my family resides in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah and I work in the area of Yanbu' , now if my wife wants to go out to the market with her brother for a need, and I want to allow her to go out when there is a need with a mahram, is this permissible or not? A1: If you intended to prevent her from going out to the market except in your company or the company of a mahram (a relative one may not marry) of hers, then there is no harm in her going out with you or with a mahram (a relative one may not marry) of hers, according to what you intended, and you owe nothing in that.
