Fatwa No. ( 630 )
Q: There was a misunderstanding between him and his wife, and he divorced her by saying: (I pronounce her divorced, I pronounce her divorced, I pronounce her divorced) Then he does not know whether he added other words or not, and whether his addition to these three words was by saying “then she is divorced” or not. He mentioned that he did not intend the number by repeating the phrase, but rather intended to make his mother understand and emphasize it to her. He asks
Is it permissible for him to take back his wife given the situation described?

A: If the matter is as the questioner described, that he divorced his wife by saying: (I pronounce her divorced, I pronounce her divorced, I pronounce her divorced) and that he does not know whether he added to that or not, and that he intended by repeating his divorce to emphasize and make it understood—then if the matter is so, this divorce is considered one divorce. And if this divorce was not the third of three divorces issued by him against her, and it was not for compensation—then his divorce is a revocable divorce, and he may take back his divorced wife as long as she is in the waiting period. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
