Fatwa number ( 15873 )
Q: My son used to give me his salary for several months out of his own free will. One day, I got angry with him and said to him: "Your salary is forbidden for me, just as my mother's is forbidden for me" . I ask for your guidance. May Allah keep you safe.
A: The questioner is obligated to pay the expiation for an oath, which is: feeding ten poor people, giving each poor person half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of food, meaning: approximately one and a half kilograms for each person, or giving each person a shirt or a lower garment and a cloak, or freeing a slave, with the choice being among these three. If he is unable to do any of these three, he must fast for three days. This is because forbidding what is lawful is treated like an oath; as Allah the Exalted said:[At-Tahrim 66:1] up to His saying: [At-Tahrim 66:2] and
it is not permissible for him to forbid his son's salary, but if he takes it, he must pay the expiation, as previously explained. He must also repent to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) for this; because forbidding what is lawful is not permissible. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
