Q: Allah granted me the success of marriage last year during my annual leave. After my leave ended, I took my wife to my father’s house to live with them, as I work in the Kingdom . After I left the
country, a quarrel—a misunderstanding—occurred between my wife and my mother, which escalated into a violent fight. When I heard this news, I became extremely upset, to the point that I wrote a letter to my wife and told her: “I am not responsible for her from today’s date, and she may take the furniture of the house and some money, and you are permissible for others,” and after 15 days I retracted the matter and tried to reconcile. I wrote to her father that I had taken my wife back, and I called my friend Yusuf on the phone and informed him of the reconciliation, and he informed some of the group. This is all that happened. If my expression and wording were clumsy, what should I do? I desire my wife, and I was overcome by emotion, even though I did not write the word divorce in the letter.

A: If the matter is as you described, what you did is considered one divorce. You may take her back while she is in the waiting period, with the testimony of two just witnesses. The waiting period is three menstrual cycles if she menstruates, or three months if she does not, and if she is pregnant, it lasts until she gives birth. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
